Tokyo Seimitsu Launches New Measuring Equipment for Optical Fiber Communications Market - Sales Begin of the FCM-5000Concentric Measuring Equipment for Ferrules
Tokyo Seimitsu Co., Ltd. (Chairman & CEO: Hideo Ohtsubo) has entered the optical fiber communications market with the FCM-5000A, a new concentricity measuring instrument for ferrules (measuring the alignment of centers of the inner and outer diameters). Simultaneously releasing this and the CEI-1000A Optical Fiber Connector End Face Inspection Machine, the Company will strengthen its position in the promising optical fiber communications market. With the need for bulk data transmission and high-speed transmission, growth potential in this market is enormous.
The Company will commence sales of the FCM-5000A in September. Applying its ground breaking air control technology, this machine uses static air bearing to support objects being examined. It then processes images of the end faces of a ferrule for measurement. This machine measures the eccentricity of the center of a ferrule's inner diameter, using the outer diameter as the base.
Eccentricity in ferrules causes gaps in connections between optical fibers, which will cause difficulties in optical data transmission. Because of this, concentric measuring is one of the most important inspection processes in the ferrule production process.
Moreover, this machine can produce accurate, consistent measurements for various materials, including plastic ferrules.

- Break through method - Existing concentric measuring machines are of a V block type. In this type of machine, a ferrule is placed on the measuring stage (called the V block) and is rotated by drive roller and then the concentricity is measured through displacement of the bore of the inner diameter. Our FCM5000A adopts a completely new concept. It applies our original high performance air jet measuring technology to float the ferrule during the measurement process (patent pending in Japan and overseas).
- Achieves consistent measurement with high accuracy - By floating the ferrule, FCM-5000A avoids contamination and wearing of the ferrule. In this way, the FCM-5000A produces stable measurement and realizes high accuracy compared to the V block type measuring method which is greatly affected by contamination and wearing. The FCM-5000A is in fact twice as accurate as the existing V block method.
- High throughput - Measuring without rotating the ferrule, the FCM-5000A completes the whole measuring process within 6 seconds (including handling of the ferrule).
- Compatible with multi-fiber type ferrules - With this new method of measuring without rotating the ferrule, the FCM-5000A can also be applied to multi-fiber type ferrule measurement.
